Security & Privacy Guidelines for Ashley Madison®

Ashley Madison® can lead to exciting connections but, as with any online space, it's important to stay aware of potential risks. Whether it's romance ploys, crypto schemes, or misleading verification processes, recognizing subtle red flags can help you make informed choices.

Here’s how to protect yourself and stay secure when enjoying Ashley Madison:

Cardinal Rules of Online Safety:

  1. Never Send Money: Scammers thrive on your willingness to help. No matter how convincing their story, never send money to someone you’ve only met online. Whether it’s for an emergency, travel costs, or an “investment opportunity,” it’s almost always a scam.

  2. Never Share Personal or Financial Information: Protect your privacy. Don’t share sensitive details like your bank account numbers, Social Security number, full name, or home address. Scammers can use this information for identity theft or fraud.

  3. Never Trust a Quick Investment Offer: If someone tries to push you into an investment opportunity—especially involving cryptocurrency—it’s a huge red flag. Scammers often use fake apps or platforms that are designed to steal your money, so never download unfamiliar apps. Take your time, do your own research, and only invest through trusted, legitimate sources.

Protecting Your Personal Info:

  • Get to know Members first: Don’t rush to share personal details like your full name, email, or phone number. Ensure your connection’s story is consistent.

    • Watch out for Members who live long distances away, especially if they are asking for financial assistance or requesting your personal information.

    • Until trust is established, we advise all Members to remain on Ashley Madison before sharing any personal information that would enable off-platform contact.

  • Photos: Avoid using photos that are also posted on social media. These may help identify you.

  • Sensitive info: Never share home addresses, credit card numbers, or government IDs. Be cautious of anyone who asks for any of these.

Keeping Your Account Secure:

  • Strong passwords: Use different, strong passwords for your account and devices you use to access Ashley Madison.

    • Avoiding predictable patterns: Don’t use personal info like names or birthdays.

    • Creating a passphrase: Combine random words or phrases that are easy to remember but hard to guess.

    • Avoiding common passwords: Don’t use easily guessed or compromised passwords.

    • Using a password manager: It helps generate and store complex, unique passwords for each account.

  • Public devices: Avoid logging in from public or shared devices. If you must, don’t save your login info, then clear the browser history afterward.

  • Two-factor authentication (2FA): Activate this feature in your settings for extra security. More info

Staying Private:

  • Use a separate email: Create a dedicated email for Ashley Madison. Avoid using your personal or work email.

    • Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, and other companies offer free email addresses and don’t require an address to create an account.

  • Incognito browsing: Use incognito or private tabs for added privacy, and clear cookies and browsing history after each session.

Watching for Red Flags:

  • Suspicious behavior: Be wary of anyone rushing off-site, requesting personal or financial details, or asking for money.

    • Remember that interactions that take place outside of our platform can’t be moderated or reviewed for suspicious activity, e.g.:

      • Phone calls

      • Video calls

      • Third-party messaging services (like gChat, WhatsApp, SnapChat, Facebook Messenger, Skype, etc.)

  • Fake profiles: If someone seems suspicious, offensive, or fraudulent, report them, so we may investigate. To report a profile, tap on the three dots icon in the top-right corner when viewing another member’s profile and tap Report.
